Most people think building a wardrobe starts with shopping.
I don’t.
I think it starts with understanding yourself.
Over the years, I’ve realized that the people who always seem effortlessly put together don’t necessarily own more clothes. They simply have more clarity. They know what they like, what fits their lifestyle, and what feels authentic to them.
That’s exactly why I created My Personal Style Story—a free worksheet designed to help you define your personal style before you ever step foot in a store.
Your Style Is More Than What You Wear
Personal style isn’t about following trends or copying someone else’s look.
It’s about creating an outward expression of who you already are.
When your wardrobe reflects your personality, your lifestyle, and the season of life you’re in, getting dressed becomes easier. Shopping becomes more intentional. Your closet starts working for you instead of against you.
Start With Three Words
One of my favorite exercises is choosing three words that describe the way you want to present yourself.
Not what Pinterest says.
Not what Instagram says.
You.
For years, my words have been:
- Timeless
- Minimal
- Edgy
Those three words became my filter.
Every purchase had to support those words. If it didn’t, it stayed in the store.
Your words will probably be completely different, and that’s the point.
Build a Color Palette
Once you know your style, the next step is creating a color palette.
I recommend starting with a few neutral colors that naturally work together and then adding accent colors you genuinely enjoy wearing.
Having a defined palette makes mixing and matching easier, reduces impulse purchases, and helps you build a wardrobe where almost everything works together.
Know Your Personal “Rules”
I don’t believe in fashion rules that everyone has to follow.
I do believe in creating your own.
Maybe you’ve discovered that high-waisted pants fit you best.
Maybe certain necklines make you feel more confident.
Maybe you love structured jackets or wide-leg trousers.
The goal isn’t to limit yourself.
The goal is to understand what consistently helps you feel like yourself.
Shop With Intention
One of the biggest mistakes people make is buying individual outfits instead of building a wardrobe.
When you understand your style, your palette, and your lifestyle, every new purchase becomes part of something bigger.
Instead of asking,
“Do I like this?”
You begin asking,
“Will this work with what I already own?”
That small shift changes everything.
Your Style Should Support Your Life
At Wilde About Interiors, I often say that our environments shape the way we live.
That includes our closets.
Your wardrobe is one of the first environments you interact with every single day.
It should reduce decision fatigue.
It should make getting dressed easier.
It should help you show up as the most authentic version of yourself.
Download Your Free Style Worksheet
If you’re not sure where to begin, I’ve created a free worksheet to guide you through the same process I use when defining my own personal style.
Inside you’ll discover prompts to help you identify:
- Your style keywords
- Your color palette
- Your patterns and prints
- Your wardrobe philosophy
- Your personal style rules
- Your lifestyle needs
- Your future purchases
There is even extra space for you to jot down ideas, add inspiration, or collect your thoughts.
Because the goal isn’t simply to own beautiful clothes.
It’s to build a wardrobe that reflects who you are and supports the life you’re building.
